33 Cars That Still Come With a Stick Shift

Once a must-have for motoring purists, vehicles with manual transmissions are now an endangered class, even among many high-performance models — we’re looking at you, Chevy Corvette. Nowadays, people are happy to let their car do the shifting. Data from Carmax shows sales of cars with manual transmissions dropping from around 25% in 1995 to about 2.5% last year. Here’s a list of survivors, from basic transportation to race-worthy sports cars. (All cars are 2022 models unless otherwise noted.)

Starting MSRP: $13,600

Economy, not power, is the name of the game for this model with a four-cylinder engine and five-speed manual transmission. It’s rated for highway driving at 38 mpg.

Starting MSRP: $14,645

The Mirage is “one of the cheapest new cars sold in the United States,” according to Kelly Blue Book. The subcompact hatchback’s 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine is fuel efficient (33 mpg city/41 mpg highway), and it has a five-speed manual transmission, but kbb.com suggests buyers go for an automatic instead.

Starting MSRP: $16,000

Every version of the Versa has a 122-horsepower four-cylinder engine, and a five-speed manual transmission is the default on base models, according to Car and Driver. Oddly, it gets better gas mileage with the optional automatic transmission.

Starting MSRP: $19,755

The base model of the midsize four-door coupe offers a five-speed manual transmission paired to a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 152 horsepower.

Starting MSRP: $20,600

The two-door hardtop model comes in a variety of trims, all available with a six-speed manual transmission and engines ranging from a 1.5-liter three-cylinder to 2.0-liter four-cylinder.

Starting MSRP: $23,000

The 2022 version of the subcompact crossover won’t include any major changes from the refreshed 2021 model, according to Kelly Blue Book. While the manufacturer isn’t listing the new model yet, the current one offered a six-speed manual transmission in at least two trim versions.

Starting MSRP: $24,485

You have to move up to the sportier GT version of this model to find a six-speed manual transmission, which is paired with a 201-horsepower four-cylinder turbo for quicker acceleration than the base model.

Starting MSRP: $25,000

Sure, you can get a 10-speed paddle shift automatic with this car, but wouldn’t you rather have the feel of a six-speed manual transmission to go with a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine for that old school muscle car experience?

While the redesigned Civic sedan has moved to a front-wheel-drive automatic transmission, the hatchback has retained an option for a six-speed stick.

Hyundai continues to offer a version of its popular midsize sedan with a six-speed manual transmission and a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine.

Car and Driver calls the Miata “arguably the definitive affordable sports car.” You can get one with an automatic transmission — but why would you? “It would be a crime to pass up the standard six-speed manual transmission,” the magazine says.

Back for the 2022 model year, this vehicle will be powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 228 horsepower and a standard six-speed transmission, Car and Driver says.

What would the iconic pony car be without a shifter on the console? There’s a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine in the base model capable of 310 horsepower and a six-speed manual transmission. And all versions are rear-wheel drive.

Starting MSRP: $28,995

At least for the most recent model year, Mazda offered a six-speed transmission with overdrive and 186 horsepower on its Preferred trim package. It hasn’t rolled out a lot of 2022 models so far.

Starting MSRP: $28,995

While the nameplate’s offerings have generally shifted to all-wheel-drive, this model remains a rear-drive-only coupe with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual transmission.

Starting MSRP: $29,300

You can’t get one of these at your local dealer just yet — Ford is taking orders now with production to begin in December for first-quarter 2022 deliveries, according to autoevolution.com — but the company’s website shows an available seven-speed manual transmission (including a “crawl” gear) paired with a 2.3-liter engine on its base two-door model.

Starting MSRP: $29,900

All of the versions of this compact station wagon have a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, and a six-speed manual transmission is available on the Cooper S trim.

Starting MSRP: $30,000 est.

The reworked WRX features a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 271 horses and a standard six-speed manual transmission.

Starting MSRP: $30,540

The eighth generation of the sporty hatchback boasts a 241-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a standard six-speed manual transmission.

As you’d expect from a brand known for rugged off-road vehicles, Jeep has signaled this model will get a six-speed manual on a base two-door model with a V6 engine, Car and Driver says.

Starting MSRP: $33,525

Hyundai’s three-door hatchback features a 275-horsepower four-cylinder turbo, which Car and Drive calls “a thrill ride almost everyone can afford.”

Kelly Blue Book says the new crew cab model will feature a standard six-speed manual transmission paired with a “highly regarded” 3.6-liter V6 and offer “strong towing and payload capacity” via the five-foot bed.

With styling cues from muscle cars of the past, the R/T trim package offers a six-speed manual transmission with a 5.7-liter V8 engine.

Details are still pending, but Car and Driver says the new version of “the mightiest Civic” will continue to sport a manual transmission.

Nissan plans to roll out a new generation of its iconic sports car in the spring of 2022 with a 400-horsepower twin-turbocharged V6 engine, six-speed manual transmission, and plenty of bells and whistles, according to Car and Driver. 

Starting MSRP: $44,640

The higher-performance hatchback is back with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine capable of 315 horsepower paired with a six-speed manual transmission.

Starting MSRP: $59,990

Sporting a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 engine and a six-speed manual transmission, this souped-up version of Cadillac’s CT4 promises a top speed of 189 mph (on the racetrack, of course).

Starting MSRP: $61,850

The entry-level version offers a 300-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission.

Three engines are offered in the Boxter convertible line — ranging from 300 to 394 horsepower — but they all come standard with “a truly satisfying” six-speed manual transmission, Car and Drive says.

The standard version of the 473-horsepower M3 “is the purist M3 because rear-wheel drive and a (six-speed) stick shift are mandatory,” Car and Driver says, while the Competition version comes only with an automatic.

Essentially a two-door coupe version of the M3, the base model “comes exclusively with real-wheel drive, a satisfying manual transmission, and a thrilling 473-horsepower twin-turbo straight si,” says Car and Driver.

Starting MSRP: $84,990

The manufacturer says availability of this model is “extremely limited,” but it might be worth a look for the performance — including a 668-horsepower, 6.2-liter V-8 engine that can reach speeds of 200 mph. Yikes.

Starting MSRP: $118,450

Sure, it’s a little pricey for most folks, but Car and Driver calls the iconic 911 “a nearly flawless sports car.” While an automatic transmission is standard, a seven-speed manual is offered in the S and GTS versions. There’s also a higher-end GT3 version.
