Storing That Food Stockpile

Many of us will likely (and hopefully) have an abundance of food in our cabinets, pantries, and elsewhere long after the coronavirus crisis is over. And even if we don't, these trying times have shown a number of us how woefully inadequate our food storage situation is. Mismatched lids, warped containers that used to hold takeout, ripped cereal boxes that spill every time we use them. Why not start fresh with a new set of containers for storing and freezing food, keeping leftovers, and organizing that untidy pantry? Below you'll find glass, plastic, and other containers — in an array of configurable options — that will work for your space. None are rated fewer than 4 stars on Amazon.

Note: Prices and availability are subject to change, especially as demand has increased during the coronavirus crisis.

Finally, Some Food Storage FAQs

While investing in new food storage containers might make your kitchen a less stressful place to cook and find items, there are a number of considerations when it comes to organization, safety, and other concerns. Read on for more tips that might help you decide which organization system to purchase.

Amazon

How Should I Organize My Food Storage Containers?

As hard as we try, our container drawers and cabinets usually get a bit out of hand, especially as mismatched pieces overtake the matched. If you can, start with having your cabinet, countertop, and pantry storage containers in a matched set that allows empty containers and lids to nest within one another. Filled containers should be modular and stackable for better organization.

However, there are a number of other ways to keep things neat and organized, too. Use a plate rack, tension rods, bins, or drawer dividers to keep lids neat and separate from containers. Alternately, there are entire food storage container organization systems like this one from Rev-a-Shelf, and another from X-cosrack that are designed to help keep things tidy and orderly.

How Many Food Storage Containers Do I Need?

This obviously depends on the size of your family, the amount of food you have stockpiled, how often you have leftovers after a meal, and how many of your pantry staples you want stored in containers.

A good rule of thumb for where to start — and you can always build from there — is to have three to five containers per person in your household for storing cut veggies and fruit, meal prep, leftovers, and such. Buy more and larger if you plan to freeze meals. If you're looking to organize your pantry, pull out everything you want to transfer from its store-bought packaging into a container — dried pasta and beans, rice, cereal, etc. — and plan how many storage containers you'll need from there.

Amazon

Where Can I Buy Bulk Food Storage Containers?

If your food stockpiles are more than the average person or family's, you can start by visiting this link on Amazon, which contains a number of larger containers. For instance, here's a Lock & Lock container that can hold more than 50 cups of one ingredient, like rice or dried beans. Or check out this set of bulk food drawstring bags in different sizes designed to hold large quantities of nuts, beans, cereal, grains, etc. The Container Store also has these Lustroware Smart Lock containers for keeping bulk amounts of food.

Which Plastic Containers Are Safe for Food Storage?

The bottoms of plastic containers contain a number inside the triangle showing that the item is recyclable. According to the Home Food Safety arm of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, you'll want to use plastics 1, 2, 4, and 5 (3, 6, and 7 have additions like BPA and PVC that you don't want leaching into your food). Look for containers that say they're BPA-free — there are many to choose from these days, and everything we included in our list is BPA-free.

If you're going to be using containers often to heat food or store hot foods, choose glass or stainless steel containers. Even BPA-free plastic containers can break down over time due to high temperatures.
