Celebrity Homes and Other Famous Places You Can Stay on Vacation

With so many housing options to choose from on, why not make it extra special by staying in a quirky cabin or luxurious mansion you've seen featured in films and TV? You may remember some of these short-term vacation rentals from your favorite TV shows, such as the cottage from "Murder, She Wrote," which starred the recently deceased Angela Lansbury. Other featured Airbnb rentals also had famous occupants — and one even has a celebrity landlord. Though some listings are pricey if you’re not splitting the cost with a crew, others may just be worth splurging on if you're a movie buff or enjoy unique and quirky rentals with tons of character.

This historic cottage has been family-owned since 1908, and that’s not the only thing memorable about it. The home served as the exterior of “Murder, She Wrote,” the popular murder mystery TV show Angela Lansbury starred in from 1984 to 1996. The actress died Tuesday at the age of 96 in Los Angeles, just five days shy of her 97th birthday.

You can live the way Dolly did while she was on the road by booking Suite 1986 at Dollywood — her actual tour bus. She used the custom designed, pink-festooned 45-foot Prevost as her personal sanctuary from 2008 through 2022 before deciding to retire it. She wrote countless songs on the bus, including "9 to 5: the Musical." It features murals, bedazzled guitars, separate closets for wigs and sparkling outfits, and two bathrooms. Sleeping where Dolly slept will cost you $10,000 for a 2-night stay, so working 9 to 5 might not cut it for everyone.

Hollywood, California | Sleeps 10

The late magician left behind a pretty magical place, given the three-story waterfall fed by a natural mineral spring on the site of his four-bedroom, four-bathroom home. Renters also get use of the pool, spa, barbecue patio,  and seven gazebos on the grounds. Check out the koi pond, too. If you’re planning an event, good news: There’s parking for more than 80 cars.

Formerly the estate of actress and talk show hostess Dinah Shore, this midcentury home has six bedrooms, eight bathrooms, and a one-bedroom guest house. Though there’s a chef’s kitchen and several fireplaces, the pool and tennis court may keep you outside. For an extra fee, daily maid service is available.

For truly devoted fans of the chef, the only other chef's kitchen like the one in this rental is in the Smithsonian. The three-bedroom, four-bathroom cottage has extensive gardens, chickens who create a daily supply of eggs, and a LaCanche double oven and stove with five burners. Want to cook outdoors? There’s an outdoor kitchen with a barbecue, pizza oven, and Tuscan grill.

If you have a Marvel fan in your household, this might be the perfect (if not particularly cheap) getaway. The house is prominently featured in the film, but even if you think “Endgame” is a sports reference, there’s still a lot going for the place. According to one reviewer, “The house had everything we needed … comfortable beds, full kitchen, WiFi, TV, and a W&D. We would have had a wonderful time if it was just a regular cabin, but the fact that it was the cabin from ‘Avengers: Endgame’ made it so worth it.”

The ABC reality dating show “The Bachelorette” always features a romantic, overseas adventure, and the season featuring Hannah B. was no different. This rustic windmill features a bedroom and bathroom, but check temperatures before you go — there’s no air conditioning. Also, don’t expect complete privacy, as tourists tend to stop by throughout the day. Even so, it’s cozy and has remarkable views of nearby mountains and an olive tree-studded valley.

While this sedate country home doesn’t exactly scream the wild 1920s lifestyle we often associate with this literary couple, they did live here from 1931-32, and you can now sleep in one of the four apartments that the house was divided into. This is also the home of the only museum in the world dedicated to the Fitzgeralds (don’t worry — the museum is in another part of the house). While the bathrooms are small, the price is reasonable (under $100 a night), and the owner points out that every attempt was made to keep the furnishings period-accurate — the living room furniture was donated by a family that was among Zelda’s childhood friends.

Fans of the movie “Twilight” can stay in Charlie and Bella Swan’s house, a 1930s five-bedroom home not far from Portland. The owners have kept many of the film’s changes, such as green kitchen cabinets, though the comforter seen in Bella’s room can be viewed but not used due to its fragility (the owners of the home assure visitors that the substitute captures the same Bella-esque esthetic. If it sounds like the answer to your “Twilight” fantasies, plan ahead — the house is completely booked a year in advance.

Ava Gardner was only married to her second husband, bandleader Artie Shaw, for a year, but that didn’t stop the pair from taking the time to move into this bucolic Burbank home. Those who stay will get access to the library with over 1,000 books, fruit trees, and Wi-Fi.
