COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on millions of U.S. households, with record numbers of people out of work overnight and turning increasingly for help putting food on the table from the federal government's SNAP, or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. In April, Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced emergency benefit increases had reached $2 billion per month, a 40% increase overall. State-by-state data shows where the number of households relying on SNAP rose the most between March and April — soaring as high as 89.6%.
