Sales Skid

It's hard to shed a tear for a billionaire like Elon Musk, whose wealth has grown dramatically amid the pandemic while millions of Americans are struggling to survive. But it's not all sunshine and butterflies in Musk's world right now (at least by some measures). A new report from iSeeCars reveals that car sales have decreased dramatically amid COVID-19 thanks to social-distancing measures. And some car models have tanked more than others. Which brings us back to Musk, whose Tesla Model 3 tops the list of car models whose sales are declining most significantly amid the pandemic. Based on data from more than 1.8 million used cars for sale, here's a ranking of the 15 models that saw the biggest sales slowdown between February and March of this year — offering car buyers the potential to negotiate a better deal as dealers look to move them off the lot.

15. Honda CR-V

Percent Sold within 30 days in February 2020: 57.8%
Percent Sold within 30 days in March 2020: 42.1%
Decline: 15.7%
Honda has more vehicles on this list of declining car sales than any other brand, with a total of five altogether. "These vehicles are all leaders in their classes thanks to their safety and proven longevity," iSeeCars CEO Phong Ly says of the Honda models that are suddenly not selling. "It shows that popular models across all vehicle types are seeing significant changes in selling times, which could bring deals to those who want a reliable used car."

Honda

14. Honda Odyssey

Percent Sold within 30 days in February 2020: 63.4%
Percent Sold within 30 days in March 2020: 47.6%
Decline: 15.8%
The second Honda to make an appearance on the list, a 1-year-old Honda Odyssey sells for an average of $33,573. The fact that these vehicles are not selling well right now presents an opportunity for consumers to potentially score a bargain, according to iSeeCars. "Overall car sales have plummeted as a result of stay-at-home orders and the economic downturn," says Ly. "But for those fortunate enough to be able to make a car purchase, now is an opportune time as dealers increasingly need to move inventory, and these slow-selling models could present great deals."

13. Honda Civic

Percent Sold within 30 days in February 2020: 65.1%
Percent Sold within 30 days in March 2020: 49.1%
Decline: 15.9%
For the popular Honda Civic, a 1-year old version of this car typically sells for about $19,404. "The vehicles with the greatest slowdown in sales cover a wide range of price points and car types, so there are potential deals for many types of consumers," says Ly.

12. Toyota Highlander

Percent Sold within 30 days in February 2020: 64.1%
Percent Sold within 30 days in March 2020: 47.9%
Decline: 16.1%
The Highlander is one of four Toyotas to show up on this ranking of vehicles taking up space on dealer's lots. And this is more than a little surprising given that the Highlander is one of the two best-selling SUVs in America, says Ly. "The popularity of these vehicles is largely due to Toyota's reliability, which makes these vehicles smart buys," he says.

A vehicle that iSeeCars calls the lone luxury model on the list (though some might argue Tesla also belongs in the luxury category) the Lexus GX 460 is aimed at those who want a luxury off-road SUV. Again, Ly says if you've had your eyes on this particular car, now may be the time to try and score a deal. Used, this vehicle typically sells for about $47,830.

Note to aspiring Tesla owners everywhere, if you've always wanted one of these pricey vehicles but haven't been able to afford it, go ahead and try your luck now. As the car model with the single greatest downturn in sales month over month (a nearly 25 percent drop), Ly predicts dealers may be ready and willing to negotiate prices to move some of these vehicles off their lots. "The Tesla Model 3 is typically in very high demand, and as a result, it is the used car with the best resale value," said Ly. "However, because they are lingering on lots now is the time when dealers may offer more deals than usual."
