Where To Find Great, Cheap Steak in Every State

For many of us, visiting a steakhouse is a treat and a luxury. But it doesn't have to break the bank, as proven by these steak meals that deliver well beyond their relatively modest prices. (Lingering supply chain issues, worker shortages and inflation have pumped up the cost of a steak noticeably nationwide.) These dining establishments go beyond a chain restaurant mentality and have a local history and rave customer reviews, from favorite local steakhouses that serve well-priced cuts with generous extras or steak-centric meals served family-style to more upscale steakhouses with noteworthy happy hours or specials offering savings off a pricey bill. Fort Payne

The most expensive steak at the Santa Fe Cattle Co. is the 22-ounce T-Bone, and it comes with one homemade side and a house salad. For $1 more, you can select fresh garlic butter, Jack Daniel's Lynchburg Glaze, chipotle glaze, or sautéed onions and mushrooms to go with it. The aged steaks earned positive reviews online, as do the the housemade scratch yeast rolls and homemade sides. This location serves $3 margaritas, beers, and Redneck teas all day long.

Homer 

Don't let the casual interior fool you. This Homer-based restaurant is highly rated with reasonable prices. Previous customers say standouts are the calamari appetizer and steaks that start at $25 with sides included. Save room for daily dessert specials and the after-dinner coffees and cocktails selection.

Phoenix

You can beat the heat and enjoy a patio side view of the valley with a cool drink from the rustic saloon of Rustler’s Rooste. Make sure to order a daily special, the Rustler's Cut or a Wrangler's Bone-in rib-eye that can feed two at 20 ounces for $30.

Hot Springs

Black tie quality in a blue jeans atmosphere is how The Brick House Grill touts its vibe. There are lots of great customer reviews online of its hand-cut steaks, all running under $34 and coming with one side and a salad.

Oakdale

The deals are legendary at House of Beef, a no-frills, family-owned dining hall. A 16-ounce New York steak seasoned with a choice of garlic seasoning or whiskey peppercorn sauce comes with soup and salad bar, garlic bread, and a selection of two sides dishes for $24.

Colorado Springs 

Steaks start at $36 at Bonny and Read — and they are served up with sides included. Starters such as Boston clams, spinach and fried goat cheese, and lobster corn chowder are also popular. 

New Milford 

Pick up 10 ounces of marinated flatiron steak with a choice of two sides for $26 at the giant red barn housing The Cookhouse, a restaurant where the portions are similarly big. A 12-ounce New York strip is $28.

Wilmington 

Top-notch, attentive service makes 8 ounces of boneless New York strip for $19 (with a side) all the more delicious, even without a specialty butter such as rosemary merlot or garlic and herb. It's one of the rare steak prices that hasn't risen in the past year, and diners pay just $7 more for 14 ounces of rib-eye at The Reef — which, as the name suggests, has seafood on the menu as well.

Miami

Las Vacas Gordas is an Argentinean Miami fusion steakhouse that opened in 1996 on Miami Beach. The owner is passionate about recreating the Argentine grill with American twists. The Enrollada steak dish is a beautiful example, and this 1.5-pound serving can feed two people easily for $40.

Sandy Springs

Timing is critical for cost savings. If you want a big lunch for four, Ray's on the River is the spot. Nestled on the banks of the Chattahoochee, the restaurant has a sharing lunch menu offering a meal for four at $80 that comes with charbroiled rib-eyes, three-cheese mac, Brussels sprouts, chocolate chip cookies, and a choice of salads. It's the economical way to savor a pricey fine steakhouse for a steal of a deal.

Honolulu

For Hawaii, the cost of the steaks at Ray's Cafe is incredibly low, with the filet mignon at $14.50 and a T-Bone for $19.50 on its posted menu. Yelp, Trip Advisor, and Google reviews are approving, with the common theme that for a no-frills restaurant, you will dine like King Kamehameha for the quality of the meal served.

Pocatello

The Pocatello location of Sandpiper, an Idaho chain, opened in 1975 and offers classic steak cuts including a $38 Steak Sandpiper, a bacon-wrapped filet topped with a mushroom cap and béarnaise sauce. It comes with a choice of a salad or signature clam chowder for an additional $4.

Chicago 

Though Bodega Sur has been around only since 2016, the Di Sapio family running it have been cooking Argentine food for Chicago for nearly three decades — so you can trust in the grilled top sirloin served in a Brazilian cut for $20 with salad, or grilled 10-ounce filet mignon with salad for $24. Just ask for the picanha or lomo, respectively.

Indianapolis

This steakhouse offers steaks that one customer quipped was "the size of a baby dinosaur" in an online review. The 14-ounce rib-eye is $55 and comes with a navy bean soup or tomato juice and a choice of potato or sauteed French green beans, with other St. Elmo's cuts coming in at a much lower price.

Des Moines

On Sundays, 801 Chophouse offers a $47 prix fixe menu that lets you get its fancier steak cuts plus sides. Dubbed "Sunday Supper special," the bargain menu is available every week from 4 p.m. to close.

Atchison

Heavy on the tasty Greek shareable appetizers, the menu at Pete's Steak House features a 12-ounce top sirloin with a choice of potato, vegetable of the day, Texas toast, and a house, Greek or Caesar salad for just $16, Opa!

Lexington

Locally owned and boasting comfortable outside and inside dining, the standouts at The Blue Heron include an 8-ounce filet of beef tenderloin, charbroiled, mushroom dusted, and with two sides, all for $53. A 40-ounce porterhouse for two at $105.

Shreveport 

Great service and freshly prepared food and sauces (don't miss the “homemade key lime pie made by Ernestina from scratch”) earn Gibbons soaring ratings from customers who review it. And that's despite prices starting at $16 for 28-day aged steaks such as a sirloin with baked potato and choice of side dish. 

York

Featuring locally sourced ingredients and hormone-free beef, The York River Landing offers a Maine Maple filet with caramelized onions and a maple bourbon glaze for $40, just one of many steak and seafood options at this family-owned restaurant.

Westminster

Out in the countryside and serving since 1937, Bullock's is a family-owned market and restaurant that serves a Delmonico queen cut for $21, a king for $22.50 and a porterhouse for $24. Locals and online customer reviews rave about this casual but satisfying family restaurant with loads of menu options and specials.

Leominster

Head straight to the Uruguayan steak offerings at Comeketo Brazilian Steakhouse, which has been sizzling steaks since 2009. There’s a top sirloin steak plate with three sides for $18, and lots of South American regional appetizers to add on.

Grand Haven

Frazee

Get the Portabella balsamic reduction charcoal-grilled rib-eye for $42 or the petit filet mignon with Maine lobster tail for $50 at Spanky's Stone Hearth, a family-owned, funky, and cool farm-to-table find.

Greenville

The original, family-owned Doe's Eat Place is in Greenville, and there's one in Paducah. Its giant T-Bone costs $26, and the other steaks are equally cheap yet big on customer-reviewed satisfaction. Doe's is popular with locals, and makes many lists for consistent deals and quality.

South Shell Knob

Close to the White River in southwest Missouri, the unassuming Steak Inn has beef starting at 6 ounces of sirloin for $12.50, and prices top out at 8 ounces of filet mignon wrapped in bacon for $32. But check out the 24-ounce sirloin for two just short of that at $31.50 — like every steak here, it comes with a trip to the salad bar and choice of baked potato, rice pilaf, french fries, and fresh baked bread.

Manhattan

“Homey,” “funky,” and “super cool” are how customers describe Sir Scott's. It has outdoor seating and prices most steak entrees under $36 — the priciest is a 16-ounce sirloin with 16 ounces of king crab for $55. Limited-portion dinners are served with a fresh relish tray, cracker basket, daily soup, fresh salad greens, baked potato, garlic toast, chocolate sundae, and coffee for under $30 deals.

Omaha

You don't have to be Warren Buffet rich to dine at Gorat’s, which opened in 1944. Known for its meaty T-Bones and whiskey rib-eyes starting at $40, this restaurant’s ambiance is on the more casual side, and the online reviews laud the service and value for the money spent.

Winnemucca

Traditional Basque foods and steak bargains can be found in The Martin Hotel’s built-in 1898 establishment, a genuine historic under-the-radar spot. The Steak Martin is the star. A 16-ounce rib-eye smothered in sauteed mushrooms and garlic. Nothing is more than $40, and every entree comes with a slew of sides and a bread pudding dessert.

Manchester

Delicious steak-centric meals with the South American twist are a specialty at Gauchos Churrascaria, which features a happy hour with its all-you-can-eat "rodizio" meal boasting a fresh salad bar and cold samplers with 13 types of meat, including sirloin and flank steak, as well as seafood, served tableside for $45.

Garfield 

Opened in 1939 and named after the boxing career of its patriarch, Charlie Blood's is the opposite of pretentious — and if the name or neighborhood setting didn't tip you off, the Western-themed menu certainly would: Its most expensive steak is a $23 rib-eye, 24 ounces of beef that comes with fries and a salad. Enjoy the same sides with a 12-ounce rib-eye for just $13.

Los Ranchos de Albuquerque 

Of course the restaurant has plenty of turquoise blue, and a of course the hearty, traditional menu is influenced by local and seasonal ingredients. The grilled rib-eye at Dave's Valley Grill is charbroiled and topped with a bleu cheese and onion butter with homemade onion rings for $19. A London broil goes down to $17. And if you're not a purist, try the rib-eye steak poutine for $12 — people love it.

Clarence

In business for more than 30 years and with loads of excellent reviews, Kennedy's Cove boasts not-to-be-missed daily specials. Tuesdays are when two New York strip steaks plus a bottle of house wine with baked potato, fries, or tots, a house salad or a cup of steak vegetable soup cost $65.

Wilson

There's no menu at the Beefmastor Inn, so we have to go by what customers rave about online. The steaks are reasonable and look to be under $35 for the most massive cuts; sides come along too. "You also receive a baked potato, unlimited salad bar, slice of bread and offered a baked onion,” one Yelper wrote. “Try it, It's fabulous."

Bismarck

Jack's Steakhouse & Saloon is still the one in Bismarck for cheap dinner deals nightly and steak cuts for under $22. Steaks come with a choice of potato, salad, or vegetable, plus fixings and fresh-baked bread.

Broadview Heights

There’s live music and libations, and all of the Wild Eagle Steak & Saloon’s steaks are certified Angus beef. All steak entrees come with a salad, one side, and its house steak sauce and cost under $29. Happy hours run 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and offers $2 off all appetizers.

Claremore 

This place has something for everyone, from burgers to steaks, and it's all a steal. A 10-ounce rib-eye served with your choice of one side plus a cup of soup or a tossed green salad is $27.50.

Portland 

There's only one steak on the menu at The Observatory by design — the restaurant was opened in 2008 with the idea of having something for everyone. Fortunately, that one steak is enough: a 10-ounce New York strip of Braveheart Black Angus beef with chimichurri, broccolini and fingerling potatoes for $22.50.

Harrisburg

Still the one everyone raves about, and considered a true landmark in the Harrisburg area, The Glass Lounge gets high marks for numerous cuts that all cost below $40. Customer reviews rave about the size of the portions, the quality of the food, and the unpretentious vibe the tavern has to offer.

Cranston

Twin Oaks, a landmark Cranston restaurant that has been family-owned for more than 80 years, thrives thanks to its large portions and daily specials. Saturday, go for the surf and turf, a 16-ounce sirloin, and two baked stuffed shrimp for $29.

Yemassee

Built-in the 1930s, Harold's Country Club was a Chevrolet dealership,  old-fashioned garage, and gas station before Harold Peeples bought it in 1973. During its Steak Saturdays, customers can reserve in advance meals that include a 12- to 14-ounce steak with baked potato, sautéed onions, salad, roll, and iced tea for $25. The restaurant reopens June 1 after a coronavirus pause.

Waverly 

Prices are under $20 for sirloins, rib-eyes, New York strips, and other menu offerings at this casual family restaurant in Waverly, which also offers Rocky Mountain oysters (bull testicles) when available. There are specials and prime rib deals every Friday and Saturday, and entrees come with bread, potatoes, and choice of soup, salad or cottage cheese.

Nashville

Demos' 10-ounce Delmonico goes for $26 and a 12-ounce sirloin for $20 at this family-owned restaurant in Nashville, which has impressed customers since 1943. The restaurant gets high marks and rave reviews for all its steaks, homemade pies, and side dishes such as red beans and rice.

Houston

Xochi is one of four restaurants from James Beard Award-winning chef Hugo Ortega. The restaurant, focused on the cuisine of Oaxaca, Mexico, has a Tlayuda de Res

grilled steak for $24 and a “powerful plate” that only starts with a grilled, rolled steak for $35.

Orem 

If the combination of pancakes and steaks wasn't a tipoff, TRUreligion is a conceptual mishmash, also combining art deco furnishings with a rich Utah history — one of its largest table was reserved daily by The Salt Lake Tribune for more than a half-century, the owners say, and the other “sat an infamous Utah document forger and murderer" — with a mission to minister to the homeless. (No one's actual religion matters, they note.) None of this would matter much if the food weren't also so enjoyed by customers, but they're very happy digging in to a 6-ounce petite sirloin for $15 or prime 10-ounce cattleman sirloin cut for $17. Steaks top out at a pound of New York Strip for $25, and it comes with bacon.

Derby

You're not going to find a lot of bargain steaks in Vermont, which is what makes the Cow Palace such a find. A 12-ounce prime rib queen cut or 9-ounce sirloin are $17 at this well-reviewed ranch-style restaurant just down the street from a classic, white-steepled church. You won't pay more than $20 for a Delmonico smothered with mushrooms, onions, peppers and melted cheese, and there's an elk sirloin for $19.

Virginia Beach

Steak dinner specials by the day at the Brass Bell include Tuesday's 10-ounce rib-eye with two sides for $22 and Thursday’s 16-ounce T-Bone with a choice of two sides for $31.

Seattle

Since 1965, the Wedgwood Broiler, a Seattle landmark, has served up choice steaks such as a filet mignon in various sizes and prices, from 6 ounces ($16) to 16 ounces ($35.50). The 18-ounce "steak for two" offers top sirloin ($42.50), New York ($46.50), or filet mignon ($53) is served Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with a choice of soup or salad and a potato.

Beckley

Consistently The Char is a solid pick for West Virginia. For 50 years, this family restaurant has served up good steaks with a lake view. Most run in the $30 range. The trick is to come for weekday happy hours, from 3 to 6 p.m., offering significant discounts on salads, appetizers, and other entrees, to and stay for dinner.

Ridgeway

The most expensive steak ($45) at the Hi Point is a porterhouse clocking in at 20 ounces that can easily feed two. The steak comes with a choice of potato, side salad, and freshly baked garlic bread. Lots of classic cuts with the house special, a $35 special with a 12-ounce Delmonico cut rib-eye from the heart of the prime rib, plus all the sides.

Beulah

The generous portions and tantalizing appetizers at the Buffalo Jump Steakhouse are on the menu in this under-the-radar gem. All of its premium steak entrées are served with a side dish and choice of salad or soup at $49 and under, starting with a 10-ounce sirloin at $25. The aged, bone-in rib-eye is the popular choice, based on online customer reviews.
